Job Summary:

The Maintenance Mechanic I-IV reports to the Equipment Maintenance Foreman and performs maintenance and repair on transit buses, paratransit vans, specialty vehicles, automobiles, and light equipment. Responsibilities include diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of systems, including engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical components. The position also prepares new vehicles/buses for service by reviewing specifications and installing specialized equipment.

The role provides responsive customer service, including on-site repairs, after-hours support, and special service requests. It includes conducting required inspections, maintaining compliance documentation, and updating warranty and service records. Requires a rotational on call shift, including weekends, holidays, evenings, or extended hours based on operational needs.

Work Schedule is: 1:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday - Friday with occasional weekend rotations and on-call responsibility.

  • $500 reimbursement for tool expenditures after 12 months.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills:

Minimum Requirements

Mechanic Level I:

  • Vocational or technical training in equipment and vehicle repairs and/or electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Six (6) months of working experience.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with Passenger Endorsement - or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
  • CFC license and CFC Refrigerant certification Type I and II or ability to obtain within one year of employment.
  • Employees in this position are required to submit to federally mandated random drug and alcohol screening and will be required to pass a DOT (Department of Transportation) physical and a substance screen prior to employment.
  • Must have own tools necessary to complete work.

Mechanic Level II - in addition to the above requirements:

  • Two (2) years of working experience.

Mechanic Level III - in addition to the above requirements:

  • Three (3) years of working experience.

Mechanic Level IV - in addition to the above requirements:

  • Five (5) years of working experience.
  • EPA 609 certificate
  • Master ASE (A series or H Series or T Series)

OR

Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job,

Preferred

  • All Levels: Current certification or have the ability to become certified to perform Department of Transportation vehicle inspections within one (1) year of hire date.
  • For Levels I - III, some ASE Certification (A Series, H Series, or T Series) preferred.
  • CNG Fuel System Engine Certificate or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment.
  • Understand standard automotive mechanics and CNG systems.
  • Prior experience working in a public transit, municipal fleet, or commercial vehicle maintenance environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of vehicle maintenance and repair, particularly related to diesel, gasoline, hybrid, and/or electric transit vehicles.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and fuel systems.
  • Familiarity with diagnostic tools and computerized vehicle diagnostic software
  • Skill in diagnosing and repairing complex vehicle systems with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, lifts, and specialized diagnostic equipment.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic codes.
  • Effective time management and task prioritization in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency or on-call assignments.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on transit vehicles, including fixed-route buses, paratransit vans, and support vehicles.
  • Troubleshoot and repair a variety of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, air brake, fuel system, and compressed natural gas (CNG) engine issues.
  • Conduct routine servicing such as oil changes, brake adjustments, tire replacement, fluid checks, and filter replacements.
  • Prepare new vehicles for service by reviewing specifications, installing auxiliary systems or components, and outfitting with specialized transit equipment.
  • Respond to service calls, breakdowns, and after-hours maintenance needs, including on-site troubleshooting and emergency repairs.
  • Perform required annual safety inspections and emissions tests, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations; complete all related documentation accurately.
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance, repairs, inspections, parts usage, and warranty work using fleet management systems.
  • Assist in managing parts inventory, including tracking, ordering, and verifying deliveries of required components.
  • Operate a variety of shop equipment and diagnostic tools in accordance with safety and operational guidelines.
  • Work scheduled shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call or emergency assignments as required.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment, following all applicable safety procedures and wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Work is performed primarily in a fleet maintenance shop environment, with occasional fieldwork for on-site repairs or road calls.
  • Exposure to noise, vibration, fumes, chemicals, lubricants, exhaust, and other hazardous materials is common.
  • Frequent exposure to moving vehicles and mechanical parts, tools, and equipment; safety awareness is essential.
  • Work may involve confined spaces, working under vehicles, or at heights using lifts or ladders.
  • Subject to inclement weather during field calls or outdoor vehicle servicing.
  • May be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency or on-call situations to meet operational needs.
  • Work is performed primarily in a fleet maintenance shop environment, with occasional fieldwork for on-site repairs or road calls.

Physical Requirements:

  • Mobility: Must be able to walk, stand, or work on uneven surfaces for extended periods. Frequently required to climb ladders, steps, and access vehicles or equipment. Regularly enters and exits service bays, pits, and vehicles.
  • Strength: Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull tools, parts, and mechanical components weighing up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 80 pounds occasionally, with assistance as needed.
  • Endurance: Capable of performing physically demanding tasks for extended shifts (8 to 12 hours), including working outdoors or in shop environments with varying temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Dexterity: Adequate manual dexterity to handle hand and power tools, fasteners, and small components. Must be able to assist with precise mechanical tasks and adjustments.
  • Flexibility: Able to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach above and below shoulder level, and maintain awkward or confined positions when completing work duties.
  • Vision and Hearing: Visual acuity sufficient to read gauges, identify parts, and inspect equipment. Hearing ability adequate to follow verbal instructions, detect warning signals, and recognize equipment malfunctions in a noisy shop or field environment.
