Fleet Technician/Equipment Mechanic

Under general supervision, the Fleet Technician performs professional fleet mechanical service and repairs on heavy duty trucks, heavy equipment, utility trucks, automobiles, hydraulic systems, turf equipment, construction equipment, and related work on a diverse fleet of equipment as required.

Essential Duties
  • Completes tasks such as lubrication, oil and filter changes, minor parts replacements, and service on vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Changes and repairs tires of automobiles and other equipment.
  • Responds to emergency calls from drivers of City-owned vehicles and equipment upon direction of the Supervisor. Assists in the transportation of vehicles and personnel from departments to the garage and return.
  • Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs mechanical problems and defects in autos, trucks, tractors, graders, rollers, mowers, and other mechanical equipment utilized by all departments.
  • Uses basic hand tools and electronic motor-testing equipment in assisting and completing tune-ups and engine repairs.
  • Uses welding equipment for routine structural repairs.
  • Picks up parts ordered from area suppliers upon the direction of the supervisor.
  • Maintains service schedules and records of work done and prepares simple reports.
  • Checks and/or test drives equipment to verify adequacy of work performed and proper running condition.
  • Expected to work outside of normal classification in the event of an emergency, winter snow event, extreme weather, or related event.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • At least two years of responsible work experience in automotive and other motor equipment repair; one year of vocational school training in mechanical repair and maintenance, or an equivalent combination of training and experience to equal years.

Licenses/Certifications
  • Valid Iowa Driver's License
  • Iowa Commercial Drivers License (CDL-A) for straight trucks over 26,000GVW, with endorsements for air brakes and tanker within six (6) months of employment.
  • ASE certification preferred
Knowledge and Skills
  • Ability to perform skilled repair duties on both gasoline and diesel equipment and engines, and other light and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to complete written reports and to calculate routine math computations accurately.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
  • Heavy work, exerting up to 100lbs of force occasionally, up to 50lbs of force frequently, up to 20lbs of force constantly to move objects.
  • Stand or sit, walk, use hands/fingers, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, push/pull, reach, and repetitive motion.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures, wet/humid conditions, dust, fumes, noise, vibration, and mechanical hazards.
