Job Summary:
Under limited supervision, Mechanic I or II services, diagnoses, and repairs a variety of gasoline and diesel automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, construction equipment, utility vehicles, pumps, compressors, generators, and trailers. Duties also include welding, auto body maintenance, and painting vehicles as necessary.
Description of duties:
- Detects and determines the cause(s) of brake, emission, cooling, exhaust fuel, starting and charging, steering and suspension, transmission, differential, hydraulic, and electrical system problems, correct cause(s) of the issues, and performs related repairs as necessary on a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
- Performs routine inspections and preventative maintenance lubrication and services.
- Changes, repairs, and dismounts and mounts tires.
- Cleans washes, vacuums, and polishes vehicles as directed.
- Performs gas and electric welding, painting, bodywork, and fabrication.
- Maintains records indicating all preventive maintenance, repairs, work orders, and time spent on each piece of equipment.
- Performs necessary inspections and repairs when needed out in the field, not only within the shop.
- Ensures that the service area and maintenance building remain clean and orderly.
- Provides oversight to entry-level mechanics during complex repair jobs.
- Performs complex diagnoses and repairs.
- Performs general administrative duties, including; garage management, fuel management, and inventory control systems.
- Familiar with spilled prevention control and countermeasures (SPCC), underground storage tanks, used oil and used tire disposal regulations.
- Ability to supervise and manage workflow and repair procedures in the absence of a Fleet Manager
- Read and interpret electrical schematics and blueprints.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required, completion of relevant vocational certification and degree is a plus.
- Professional certifications in automotive/equipment repair are desired.
- Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record, CDL "Class B" or higher a plus.
- Communication skills; written and verbal; documentation, communication with peers, etc.
- Possession of the hand tools required to maintain and repair light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment
- Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are required.
Minimum Qualifications for Mechanic II:
- Minimum of five (5) years of equipment or vehicle maintenance and repair is required.
- Ability to diagnose, repair and recover A/C refrigerant required.
Minimum Qualifications for Mechanic I:
- Minimum of two (2) years of equipment or vehicle maintenance and repair is required.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
- Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- More than 50% of the typical workday may be spent walking, sitting, standing, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching, and using repetitive wrists, hands, or finger motions.
- Between 25% and 50% of the typical workday may be spent climbing stairs.
- Sensory abilities required are feeling, grasping, and touching, with more than 50% of the time spent talking and hearing.
- Visual abilities to perform tasks required are to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment and determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
- Most of the work is conducted within an inside garage setting; however, occasionally, work is performed outside with exposure to extreme heat, high humidity, and sometimes adverse weather conditions as well occasional extreme cold.
- Will be exposed to hazards such as moving mechanical parts and moving vehicles.
- May be subject to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, oils, odors, dust, mists, or poor ventilation.
- It will be subject to close quarters, such as narrow aisles or passageways/hallways.
- Noise levels are generally considered normal.
