Were looking for a Lead Mechanic who can keep our fleet and equipment running at peak performance and maintain a shop were proud of.
Position Overview
The Lead Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing A-Teams full fleet of trucks, vans, trailers, skid steers, front end loaders, sidewalk machines, and powered equipment. Reporting directly to the General Manager and coordinating closely with the Operations Manager, you will minimize downtime, own preventive maintenance, and directly supervise one Junior Mechanic. This is a hands-on leadership role you are the standard-setter for shop quality, safety, and professionalism.
Key Responsibilities
Diagnose, repair, and maintain gas and diesel trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment including skid steers and front end loaders
Service and repair small engine equipment: mowers, blowers, plate compactors, concrete saws, spreaders, and snow plows/salters
Develop and execute preventive maintenance schedules for the full fleet; keep all equipment field-ready
Perform seasonal equipment transitions (plow and salter mounting/dismounting, etc.)
Manage parts inventory and vendor relationships; source parts efficiently to minimize costs and downtime
Perform welding and fabrication repairs as needed
Document all maintenance and repairs using fleet maintenance software (Fleetio); maintain accurate, up-to-date service records
Coordinate daily/weekly with the Operations Manager on equipment availability and repair priorities based on job schedules
Directly supervise and mentor the Junior Mechanic; assign work orders, review quality, and support their development
Train field crew members on proper equipment operation and basic maintenance practices
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop at all times this is a non-negotiable standard at A-Team
Required Qualifications
5+ years of hands-on mechanical experience with commercial vehicles and heavy equipment
Strong diagnostic ability both electronic and mechanical troubleshooting
Experience with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems
Experience operating and servicing skid steers and front end loaders
Proficiency with small engine repair
Valid Michigan drivers license with a clean driving record; CDL preferred
Computer proficiency: fleet maintenance software (or ability to learn quickly), email, and general internet use
Ability to work independently, prioritize across multiple open work orders, and lead by example
Physical ability to lift 75+ lbs and work in all weather conditions
Commitment to shop cleanliness, organization, and safety
Preferred Qualifications
Experience servicing snow removal equipment (plows, spreaders, loader attachments)
Familiarity with concrete and landscaping equipment (plate compactors, concrete saws, mowers, blowers, etc)
ASE certification or vocational/technical training in diesel mechanics or automotive technology
MIG/TIG welding experience
Prior experience in a lead mechanic, shop foreman, or supervisory role
Compensation & Benefits
$35$45/hour depending on experience
