  • Performs basic services to vehicles. assists with general cleaning of the shop. assist with parts room chores. Must be computer efficient.
  • Service work includes oil change, tire replacement and or rotation, Brake replacement as needed, minor other repair work as needed. Must be able to follow a task list to perform necessary services.All work is to be recorded on a computer.
  • General cleaning will include tire disposal, Garbage removal, work area cleaning.
  • Parts room chores will include stocking shelves and basis cleaning of the area.
  • Other duties as needed will apply to this position.
  • Must have own tools
  • North Carolina State Inspection license is a plus. Will require to get certified asap if not already certified.

Purpose of the Position:

The purpose of this position is to be responsible for performing mechanical work to repair, maintain, and rebuild gasoline and alternative fueled automotive equipment.

Supervisory/Leadership Responsibilities:

Provide training and lead worker support through motivation, direction, review, and feedback of assigned tasks.

Minimum Education, Training and/or Experience (required at time of hire): High school diploma or GED, and a minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in the repair of gasoline and alternatively fueled automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be 18 years of age or older.

Additional Training and Experience: Completion of Safety Training post hire.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation: Possession of a valid North Carolina drivers license; North Carolina Inspection License; May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technicians as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.

Physical Requirements:

The work is primarily heavy work requiring exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 30 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Maintain County vehicles in good working order including automobiles, trucks, ambulances, and other vehicles; ensures vehicles are safe and are in good working order.

  • Perform diagnostics on vehicles brought in for services; perform general and deferred maintenance on assigned vehicles as per scheduler.

  • Perform vehicle inspections as needed by North Carolina state licensing.

  • Applies knowledge of safety procedures when operating tools and working with machinery and moving mechanical parts.

  • Assume responsibility for the department in the absence of the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines.

  • Knowledge of the methods of adjusting and repairing the electrical wiring and generating systems of automotive equipment.

  • Ability to determine the causes of and the methods to be used in the repair of improperly operating automotive equipment.

  • Ability to read and comprehend repair manuals.

  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to move relatively heavy objects and to perform manual labor for considerable periods of time.

  • Knowledge of electronic diagnostics.

  • Knowledge of computers.

  • knowledge of the various testing devices, machines, and hand tools used in mechanical repair work.

  • Skill in the use of machine and hand tools.

  • Plan, prioritize and organize work effectively to produce quality work with measurable results and within identified deadlines.
