POSITION DETAILS 

JOB PURPOSE 

Perform diagnostics, maintenance, repair, and reconditioning work on customer, donated, program, and sales vehicles to support the mission and daily operations of Second Chances Garage. This position plays a critical role in helping provide safe, reliable transportation to individuals and families throughout the community. Technicians are expected to work collaboratively, communicate effectively, maintain high quality workmanship, and contribute to a positive, mission-focused shop culture. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Performs diagnostics, maintenance, inspections, and repairs on domestic and foreign vehicles 

• Completes oil changes, fluid exchanges, brake repairs, tire services, suspension work, electrical repairs, and drivability diagnostics 

• Assists with vehicle reconditioning for program and sales vehicles 

• Identifies needed repairs and communicates findings clearly to the Operations Manager and service team 

• Completes repair orders accurately  

• Maintains organization and cleanliness of assigned work areas and shop equipment 

• Assists with vehicle movement, jump starts, tire inflation, fueling, and shop workflow as needed 

• Supports apprentices and less experienced technicians when appropriate 

• Maintains proper use and care of shop tools and equipment 

• Participates in continuing education and training opportunities 

• Treats customers, donors, coworkers, volunteers, and program participants with professionalism and respect 

• Other duties as assigned 

WORKING CONDITIONS 

• Works primarily Monday – Friday during regular business hours 

• Full-time position 

• Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, chemicals, fumes, loud noises, and varying weather conditions 

• Fast-paced automotive shop environment with changing priorities and workflow demands 

TECHNICAL SKILLS 

• Safety and Security – Observes safety procedures and reports unsafe conditions; properly utilizes shop equipment and personal protective equipment 

• Customer Service – Approaches all interactions with professionalism, patience, and respect 

• Ethics – Demonstrates integrity, accountability, and stewardship of organizational resources 

• Job Knowledge – Maintains competency in automotive repair procedures, diagnostics, and repair standards 

• Use of Technology – Utilizes shop management systems, scan tools, and diagnostic software effectively 

• Problem Solving – Diagnoses issues efficiently and develops practical repair solutions 

• Cooperation – Works collaboratively with technicians, office staff, volunteers, and leadership 

• Adaptability – Adjusts to changing shop priorities and operational needs 

• Communication – Clearly communicates repair needs, timelines, and concerns to team members 

DIRECT REPORTS 

• This job has no supervisory responsibilities 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

• Frequently stands, bends, crouches, kneels, lifts, and works in an active shop environment 

• Frequently lifts tools, parts, and equipment up to 50 lbs. 

• May work underneath vehicles, operate lifts, and use power tools and diagnostic equipment 

QUALIFICATIONS 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS 

• Minimum of two years related automotive repair experience and/or technical training; equivalent combinations of education and experience considered 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS 

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent work history 

• CTC a plus 

CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSES OR LANGUAGES 

• Valid Maryland Driver’s License with insurable driving record required 

• ASE Certifications preferred or willingness to pursue ASE certification 

SKILLS OR KNOWLEDGE 

• Knowledge of automotive maintenance, diagnostics, and repair procedures 

• Familiarity with automotive shop equipment and diagnostic systems 

• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills 

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
