Job Details:
Schedule: Monday Friday, 5:00 AM 2:00 PM
Pay: $19.85/hr to start, with the potential for more based on experience and qualifications Location: Greenville, SC
Requirements:
o High school diploma or GED required
o At least six (6) months of prior automotive repair experience, OR completion of a technical automotive or diesel technology training/certification program
o Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License at hire
o Must obtain a South Carolina Class B Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) within three (3) weeks of hire
o Must obtain a South Carolina Class B CDL with passenger endorsement within three (3) months of hire
o Must pass a comprehensive background check and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check prior to placement
o Steel-toe shoes required; safety glasses, ear plugs, and gloves provided
Position Overview
As a Transit Mechanic I, you will play an essential role in keeping a fleet of transit and service vehicles safe, reliable, and road-ready. Working under immediate direction and in compliance with established policies and procedures, you will perform manufacturer-specified preventive maintenance and safety checks, assist senior mechanics with a wide range of repairs, respond to field service calls, and help maintain a clean and organized shop environment. Key Responsibilities
Preventive Maintenance & Repairs
Perform manufacturer-specified PM services and multi-point safety checks on all transit and service vehicles
Execute fluid/filter changes; test and repair cooling system components (hoses, thermostats, heater cores)
Replace gas engine components including spark plugs, coil packs, and fuel injectors
Diagnose and replace hydraulic brake components: pads, rotors, brake lines, and calipers Replace suspension components (shocks, bushings), driveline components (u-joints, mid-shaft bearings), and exhaust system components (mufflers, hangers, DPF and DOC filters)
Diagnose and repair basic automotive circuits: headlights, brake lights, fuses, and relays Document all maintenance and repairs via check sheets and fleet management system data entry
Retrieve necessary repair parts from the parts room
Shop Maintenance & Safety
Maintain a clean, safe shop environment sweep, mop, and organize work areas
Clean tools and equipment after use and store them in designated areas
Ensure shop floors and surfaces are free of clutter, debris, and spills
On-Call Field Service
Respond to field calls; survey location and equipment for safety assurance
Perform on-site diagnostics to determine if a vehicle can be repaired in the field or requires towing
Change/repair tires, replace batteries, and jump-start vehicles and equipment in the field
Perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications Over one (1) year of experience in automotive repair Experience maintaining and repairing buses or other transit vehicles Completion of mechanic competency classification test at a minimum of Level I within six (6) months of hire
Driver's License Requirements
Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License required at time of hire
Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) required within three (3) weeks of hire
Valid South Carolina Class B CDL with passenger endorsement required within three (3) months of hire
Applicants residing outside of South Carolina must live in a neighboring state (Georgia or North Carolina) and meet the same CDL requirements as South Carolina residents
