Job Specifications

This position may be filled at the Fleet Technician I, II, III, or Master Technician level, depending on the candidate's experience, certifications, and demonstrated skill level.

Fleet Technicians perform maintenance and repair on a wide range of gasoline, diesel, CNG, electric, and hybrid-powered vehicles and equipment, including light- and heavy-duty trucks, transit buses, fire apparatus, pumps, compressors, sanitation equipment, and related heavy machinery.

Level-Specific Responsibilities

Fleet Technician I

  • Perform basic maintenance and mechanical repairs on automotive and heavy equipment.
  • Assist with inspections, preventive maintenance, and component replacement.
  • Use established repair methods and procedures.
  • Work under general supervision with work reviewed during and upon completion.
  • Learn diagnostic and repair techniques through hands-on experience.

Fleet Technician II

  • Perform moderately complex mechanical repairs and maintenance on light- and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical issues and determine appropriate repair methods.
  • Work independently after receiving work orders, exercising sound judgment and initiative.
  • Maintain and repair pumps, motors, compressors, hydraulic systems, and related equipment.
  • Work under general supervision; work reviewed during and after completion.

Fleet Technician III

  • Perform advanced mechanical diagnostics, repairs, and overhauls.
  • Work on gasoline, diesel, CNG, electric, and hybrid-powered vehicles and equipment.
  • Independently determine repair methods and solutions with minimal supervision.
  • Handle complex systems including hydraulics, electrical, drivetrains, and specialized equipment.
  • Serve as a technical resource for lower-level technicians when needed.

Fleet Master Technician

  • Perform highly complex and specialized maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs across all fleet systems.
  • Work with minimal to no supervision, exercising expert-level judgment and initiative.
  • Diagnose and resolve the most difficult mechanical, electrical, and hybrid system issues.
  • Support fleet reliability through advanced troubleshooting and technical leadership.
  • May assist in mentoring technicians and supporting fleet maintenance standards.

Minimum Training & Experience

Fleet Technician I

Possession of a high school diploma or an equivalent recognized certificate and one year (or 300 hours) of formal training that includes automotive or diesel repair in a professional repair shop environment. Directly related experience may be substituted on an equivalent basis for the required formal training.

Fleet Technician II

Possession of a high school diploma or an equivalent recognized certificate and three years of experience that includes automotive repair in a professional repair shop environment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Directly related experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

Fleet Technician III

Possession of a high school diploma or an equivalent recognized certificate and five (5) years of professional experience in the repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, buses, or equipment or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Directly related experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

Fleet Master Technician

Possession of a high school diploma or an equivalent recognized certificate and ten (10) years of professional experience in the repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, buses, or equipment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Directly related experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

Necessary Special Requirements

Fleet Technician I

  • Must possess a valid Class E Driver's License and obtain the appropriate State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and endorsement(s) within six months from the time of appointment. The class of CDL needed is dependent upon duty assignment: Fleet - Class A or StarMetro - Class B with Air brake and P endorsement

Fleet Technician II

  • Must possess the appropriate State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and endorsement(s) at the time of appointment, depending on duty assignment: Fleet Class (A) OR StarMetro (B) w/ Air brake and (P) endorsement.
  • Must possess an EPA Section 608 or 609 certification.
  • Must possess four (4) ASE certifications in the same Series (Automobile, Medium/Heavy Truck, or Transit Bus), consistent with duty assignment.
  • At the department director's discretion, a Heating and Air Conditioning certificate from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (NIASE) or an equivalent certificate may be required at the time of application for any of the designated positions allocated to this class.

Fleet Technician III

  • Must possess the appropriate State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and endorsement(s) at the time of appointment, depending on duty assignment: Fleet Class (A) OR StarMetro (B) w/ Air brake and (P) endorsement.
  • Must possess an EPA Section 608 or 609 certification.
  • Must possess one (1) ASE Master Certification (Automobile, Medium/Heavy Truck, or Transit Bus).
  • Must possess the ASE Light Duty Hybrid/EV Certification OR Proterra EV Bus Training Certification, depending on duty assignment.

Salary Range

$16.1262 to $58.7999/hourly. Hiring rate generally will not exceed $36.9346/hour.
