Position

Mechanic Transportation Department

General Job Description

Perform skilled mechanical work in the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of district vehicles and transportation equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation of the school bus fleet and support vehicles.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Completion of an automotive or diesel mechanic program or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Ability to work with large numbers of co-workers and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Knowledge of automotive and diesel systems, tools, diagnostic equipment, and safety practices.
  • Valid New Mexico driver's license; CDL with school bus endorsement preferred or ability to obtain.
  • ASE certification(s) or ability to obtain preferred.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform assignments in such a manner so as not to interrupt the transportation schedule or school operations.

  • Communicate with supervisor and co-workers.
  • Plan and execute work efficiently within the work order system.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and brake systems on school buses and district vehicles.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance including oil changes, tire rotation, fluid checks, and safety inspections.
  • Ensure all vehicles meet state inspection standards and district safety requirements.
  • Maintain records of repairs, inspections, and maintenance activities.
  • Respond to breakdowns and provide roadside assistance as needed.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform manual physical labor, lifting and moving materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Maintain assigned uniforms, work vehicle(s), equipment, tools, and shop area in operable, safe, and attractive condition.
  • Account for supplies, materials, and equipment as required.
  • Complete records and reports as required in a timely manner.
  • Assist other departments as needed with vehicle or equipment maintenance.
  • Maintain facilities security.
  • Use technology for management (work orders, e-mail, diagnostic software, etc.).
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor, Transportation Director, and/or Superintendent.

Physical Requirements

  • Physical ability to do manual work for 10 hours per day.
  • Standing, driving, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting, and working under vehicles.
  • Lifting from floor to mid-thigh maximum (50 pounds) occasionally.
  • Lifting from mid-thigh to shoulder maximum (50 pounds) occasionally.
  • Lifting from shoulder to overhead (40 pounds) occasionally; carrying (50 pounds) maximum occasionally.
  • Lifting more than 50 pounds of dead weight should be done by at least two people.
  • Work in tight spaces, under vehicles, and at varying heights.
  • Hand/eye coordination and normal range of sight.
  • Ability to move and operate machinery and related equipment.
  • Fingering or otherwise working with fingers.

Safety & Health

  • Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.
  • Knowledge of shop safety practices, including proper use of lifts, tools, and hazardous materials.
  • Knowledge of first aid procedures preferred.

Equipment/Material Handled

Automotive and diesel engines, diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, lifts, jacks, air tools, brake systems, tires, fluids, and materials related to vehicle maintenance and repair.

Work Environment

The work environment varies greatly in the place of work from working in a shop setting to outdoor roadside conditions. Conditions range from working outside in extreme heat or cold to working in enclosed shop areas. Work schedule may include early mornings, evenings, or emergency call-outs. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. Must be able to work under stressful conditions. Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine.
