Our community relies on a diverse fleet of vehicles to keep Durango safe, clean, and moving forward from police cruisers and snowplows to transit buses and small engine equipment. As a Mechanic, youll help keep this equipment reliable and ready for use. In this role, youll perform preventative maintenance, troubleshoot mechanical issues, and complete repairs on a wide range of city vehicles and equipment. Youll work closely with experienced mechanics and supervisors to diagnose heavy-duty and major mechanical issues, gaining hands-on experience with the systems used in a diverse municipal fleet.

- Perform preventative maintenance and inspections on city vehicles and equipment based on manufacturer guidelines and city standards.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues on cars, trucks, small equipment, and other fleet vehicles.
- Assist senior mechanics with troubleshooting and repairing medium- and heavy-duty equipment.
- Complete repairs such as engine work, suspension and brake service, electrical repairs, and air conditioning maintenance.
- Document inspections, repairs, and parts used to maintain accurate maintenance records.
- Use diagnostic tools, technical manuals, and wiring diagrams to identify and resolve equipment issues.
- Fabricate or weld parts when needed to repair or improve equipment function.
- Operate shop equipment such as lathes, presses, grinders, and other repair tools.
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace that supports safe and efficient operations.
- Work with staff across departments to help keep city vehicles and equipment operating reliably.
- A high school diploma or GED, plus at least two years of professional automotive repair experience.
- A complete set of personal mechanic hand tools (both American and metric) up to a 3/4 drive.
- A valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with bus and airbrake endorsements (or the ability to obtain one).
- The ability to earn and keep four ASE certifications (A1, A4, A5, and A6) within your first three years on the job.
- Maintain an organized workspace and follow best practices to keep yourself and your teammates safe.
- Can read and follow technical manuals, diagrams, and maintenance procedures.
- Communicate clearly with coworkers and supervisors about repairs and equipment issues.
- Stay organized and maintain clear records of the work you complete.
