DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The Mechanic performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive, park maintenance, construction, and related equipment requiring a high degree of technical ability as related to motor or major assembly rebuilding.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Determine causes of mechanical operating problems and failures to automotive and heavy equipment; trace and locate defects to make necessary repairs; repair and rebuild gasoline and diesel engines, rear-ends, transmissions, air compressors, auxiliary engines, heavy-duty pumps, gate and hydraulic valves, etc.

Perform vehicle safety and operation inspections and schedule periodic preventative inspections.

Perform preventative maintenance on gasoline and diesel powered engines and equipment;

Stay abreast of new automotive systems and maintenance.

Maintain accurate daily, weekly and monthly logs of equipment and vehicle repairs.

Maintain a current and accurate file on every vehicle with records of new tires, tune-ups, oil changes, and major repairs.

Maintain monthly inventory of tools, replacement parts, and equipment.

Assist drivers in filling out vehicle inspections; report evidence of vehicle damage, neglect, or abuse to supervisor.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:

Knowledge of the methods, tools, and standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade.

Knowledge of the principles and operation of internal combustion engines, both gasoline and diesel.

Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the mechanic trade.

Working knowledge of servicing and repairing of air brakes and air systems.

Knowledge of automatic electrical systems and equipment.

Knowledge of gas and arc welding; skill in the care and use of tools employed in all phases of automotive repair and maintenance.

Ability to diagnose defects in and repair general automotive equipment.

Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community officials, and the public.

Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a Drug-free workplace.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma or GED and a minimum of five (5) years' work related experience in repairing and overhauling of gasoline and diesel engines and engine component or possess certification from a State of Arizona accredited trade school.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:

Required to have a Commercial Driver's License with Hazmat & Tanker endorsement or must be able to obtain a CDL with endorsements within 120 days of employment.

Required to obtain a Tribal Operator's permit. Valid state driver's license with a current proof of driving record for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit. Proof of driving record must be submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission of the application.
