PAY RANGE: $16.68 - $29.28 per hour

SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Mechanic Supervisor II, this position supports the developed tactical goals and objectives of the Amarillo Fire Department. This position performs various types of maintenance and repair of fleet maintenance vehicles, in accordance with applicable specifications, schedules and standards. This position determines needed repairs and/or replacements for Amarillo Fire Department vehicles; ensures the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition; and provides written documentation of repairs to meet district, state, and federal requirements.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports and develops maintenance of equipment and apparatus, as well as the budgetary process and expenditures associated with equipment and apparatus.
  • Troubleshoots, analyzes, and repairs all fire equipment and apparatus.
  • Conducts on scene repairs of AFD equipment and apparatus during non-emergency situations and emergency incidents.
  • Coordinates equipment failures and repairs in priority as determined by the Master Mechanic.
  • Analyze fire equipment and apparatus mechanical failures and maintenance issues to determine repair procedures.
  • Functions within the ICS while working at emergency scenes.
  • Completes accurate documentation of work orders.
  • Assists with the procurement of fire equipment and apparatus repair parts, tools, and supplies.
  • Maintains records of all services and repairs.
  • Practices safety, good housekeeping, and preventive maintenance in all work.
  • Diagnoses potential vehicle malfunctions (e.g. using computer diagnostic equipment, etc.) to determine needed vehicle repairs and/or replacements.
  • Performs state inspections of transportation equipment, to ensure its safe operating condition.
  • Maintains and repairs equipment to ensure its safe operating condition, repairs include, but are not limited to steering, brakes and systems repair, cooling, and HVAC repairs, starting, charging, lighting and other electrical repairs, diesel engine repair and diagnosis, transmission, and hydraulics repair.
  • Maintains tools and/or equipment to ensure the availability of equipment in a safe operating condition.
  • Trains other employees as necessary.
  • Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.
  • Performs general housekeeping of the shop area daily.
  • Oversees inventory and property management.
  • Approves purchases up to $3,000 without supervisor approval.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of two years of experience in Auto Mechanics, Diesel Mechanics, or servicing vehicles. An associate degree in auto/diesel repair may be considered for up to two years of experience. Must possess a Valid Texas Driver's License and be able to obtain a Valid Texas Class-A CDL Driver's License with X endorsement. Welding experience preferred. Required to acquire and maintain the following licenses and certifications within 90 days of employment: Texas State Vehicle Inspection License and Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning (MVAC) System Certification. Required to acquire and maintain the following licenses and certifications within 3 years of employment: ASE Certifications and Emergency Vehicle Technician Level -1 Certification. Must live within 30 minutes of the Amarillo City limits and must be available for rotating on-call, 24-hour emergency call out procedures. Must supply own full set of tools.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of practices, methods, and tools used in the mechanic trade related equipment found in a complete repair facility.
  • Ability to troubleshooting skills, read wiring schematics and diagrams, and read repair manuals.
  • Knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical engines.
  • Ability to operate diagnosis computers, engine analyzer, multi-meters, charging and starting systems testers, overhead crane, manifold gauges, pressure testers, micrometers, dial indicators, drill press and hydraulic jacks.
  • Ability to operate computers for data entry and word processing.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skill.
  • Ability to operate two-way public safety radios, small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee works in a high-stress, dynamic environment that requires being sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs. The employee may be required to work in tight or confined-spaced and in all types of weather. This position will occasionally be required to work an on-call rotation which includes after-hours, nights, and weekends, as needed.
