An employee in this class service, diagnosis and repair of passenger cars, light duty trucks and heavy equipment for the city fleet. The employee assures all aspects of the repair are completes, paperwork is completed and submitted. Repair work includes breakdowns, malfunctions and emergency roadside repair and ensures the safe operating condition of fleet vehicles. Work resources may include written manuals video instructions, and oral instructions from supervisor. Work requires a thorough understanding of mechanics and repairs of all types of vehicles and equipment. Work is performed under regular supervision of Fleet Maintenance Superintendent and is evaluated through periodical review of service logs, reports and work completed. This classification is considered non-exempt in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).Essential and other important responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Diagnoses vehicle malfunctions to determine needed repairs and/or replacements.
  • Inspects, repairs and maintains heavy equipment (e.g. tractors, back hoes, forklifts, mixers, skip loaders, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment in safe operating condition.
  • Responds to emergency roadside assistance Performs the full range of equipment mechanic duties
  • Performs maintenance and repair welding on equipment; fabricate parts as required.
  • Diagnoses and repairs hydraulic systems.
  • Orders and picks up necessary parts for repair of equipment.
  • Checks for reports for conditions needing attention on vehicles; checks for upgrades to more efficient repairs.
  • Communicates the repairs to clients and provides expected time to return to service.
  • Maintains maintenance records.
  • Performs final operational test on all vehicles to quality-check all repairs.
  • Performs related duties as required.
Education Requirements
High School Diploma or GED

Driver's License
North Carolina Class C
Obtain North Carolina Class B within 6 Months

Technical Certifications
Auto and Light Truck Certifications or equivalent (4 minimum)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES A combination of education, training, and experience providing the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Ability to consistently and effectively perform vehicle and equipment maintenance duties
  • create and maintain a positive work environment for all employees.
  • Requires the ability to read professional, technical documentation, directions, instructions, methods and procedures.
  • Requires considerable knowledge of hazards involved in vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring schematics
  • Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to interpret Federal and State statues and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of methods, techniques and procedures involved in maintenance, repairs and replacement of variety of equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and techniques in diesel and gas engine mechanics.
  • Welding and cutting experience.
  • Ability to perform the full range of.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the general public
  • Demonstrable customer service skills including responding to customer's complaints, problem solving skills while maintaining professional attitude.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • General knowledge of OSHA standards and guidelines.
  • General knowledge of safe working practices.
  • Ability to communicate very effectively, both written and verbally, with supervisors, peers, and subordinates to convey information.
