The Bureau of Fleet and Facilities is hiring multiple Vehicle and Equipment Mechanics.
Job Appointment: Full time, regular

Work Schedule: Monday Friday, 8am-5pm. Alternate schedule may be available.

Work Location: This position will report in-person to various work locations.

Position Summary

As a Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic at the City of Portland, no day is ever the same. These positions perform journey-level mechanical and electrical repairs & overhauls on a wide variety of vehicles/equipment supporting all City Bureaus. Work varies from diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, transmissions, heating & air conditioning, to aerial lifts. Our teams are proud to communicate effectively and foster positive relationships. We are committed to work hard but always ensure that safety is the primary focus.

This classification is utilized in both the Bureau of Fleet and Facilities as well as Portland Fire & Rescue. The eligible list from this recruitment may be used to fill vacancies in both bureaus.

** This is an essential classification which is expected to report to work during inclement weather and other situations where the Mayor shuts down the city to all employees except essential.**

Current Vacancies
Bureau of Fleet and Facilities : The City of Portland CityFleet Division maintains over 4,000 unique vehicles and equipment that are city owned as well as equipment owned by outside agencies. The vehicles and equipment range from motorcycles to heavy class 8 trucks and off-road equipment. CityFleet also provides a unique opportunity for technicians to work on alternative fueled vehicles including electric, hybrid, and renewable compressed natural gas. These positions will be responsible for performing preventative maintenance and repairs with a focus on providing safe, reliable, affordable, and compliant equipment to City maintenance and operational bureaus.

AA degree in Automotive or Diesel technology or related fields including specialty certifications is preferred. Premiums paid for ASE Master Certificate and alternative shifts

Portland Fire & Rescue: PF&R anticipates having open positions and may utilize this recruitments eligible list.

  • This position performs journey level work on a wide variety of specialty rescue/ emergency equipment and systems with focus being on heavy truck chassis maintenance troubleshooting and repair.
  • Applicants should be familiar with methods, materials, equipment and tools used in routine welding and fabrication work.
  • The incumbent must be available to work a rotating on-call assignment to provide 24-7 afterhours repair service to the Fire Bureau, and have the flexibility to report to work without delay in the event of an emergency.
  • Applicants that are successful and do not hold ASE, or EVT certification are strongly urged to obtain these certifications. There is a pay incentive for individuals with these certifications.
  • Prior fire apparatus repair experience, ASE certifications, or EVT certification is preferred but not required.

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
  1. Experience with mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, air and structural systems for various vehicles and equipment.
  2. Experience and skills performing repair, tune-ups and preventative maintenance techniques on various types of vehicles and equipment.
  3. Experience troubleshooting and using computer diagnostics from original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and aftermarket providers.
  4. Ability to record maintenance records on a PC computer.
  5. Experience working constructively in a team and applying safety standards and procedures.

Applicants must also possess:

  • A valid state drivers license and acceptable driving record
  • Valid CDL within 6 months of hire (City of Portland will pay for the CDL)
  • Some positions may require the ability to successfully pass an in-depth background investigation

Step 3: Minimum Qualification Evaluation Phase 2: Work Skills Demonstration

  • Applicants who successfully pass Minimum Qualification Evaluation Phase 1 of the recruitment process will be scheduled to participate in the work skills demonstration, weighted 100%. The work skills demonstration test will cover the following:
    • Parts Identification
    • Electrical Board Diagnosis
    • Troubleshooting Scenario
    • Pre-Trip Inspection
  • An invitation will be sent via email. Out-of-town candidates will be required to travel to participate in phase II.
  • Phase II is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 12 . A photo ID will be required for admittance to the test.
  • All Safety protocols must be followed.

  • Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on the equally ranked eligible list.

  • Hiring bureau will review and select candidates to interview.
Step 6: Offer of Employment: August

Step 7: Start Date: September
  • A start date will be determined after all conditions of employment have been met.
