POSITION DESCRIPTION

Mechanic I

POSITION OBJECTIVES: To provide for efficient, reliable, and prompt maintenance and repair

service in a manner which will achieve the objectives of the section, department, and the system

and present a favorable image of the Cooperative; and to consistently work and communicate in

a team oriented environment in accordance with the Cooperative's vision, mission, and values

MINIMUM JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent is required.

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of two (2) years' experience in automotive maintenance and repair

is required.

KNOWLEDGE: Require the basic knowledge to learn the duties and responsibilities of the

position. Require basic knowledge of repair and maintenance of automotive equipment,

tractors, trailers, hydraulic equipment, small engines, hand tools, and all component parts.

Require familiarity with the use of diagrams, charts, and factory manuals in maintenance and

repair of equipment. Must have or be able to obtain and maintain Commercial Driver's License

and comply with state laws regarding the CDL process within 6 months of hire date. Require a

willingness to pursue a continuous program of self-development both inside and outside of work

hours in furthering his/her knowledge to develop in the job and accept increasing

responsibilities.

SKILLS: Require effective leadership skills, excellent communications skills, both written and

verbal, and the ability to work in a team environment. Require the ability to perform neat and

accurate work, determine priorities of work, meet schedules for accomplishment, and make

recommendations for improvements. Require the ability to be objective, reliable, and prompt in

performance of duties. Require the ability to work safe and have efficient use of all equipment

and power tools related to shop activities. Require the ability to understand and follow

specifications for shop maintenance activities. Interact and effectively communicate with others

when needed. The Mechanic I must possess the abilities and skills to learn and perform the

following:

Inspect, repair and maintain functional parts of automotive and mechanical equipment, such as

the following: trucks, tractors, trailers, hydraulic equipment, power saws, and small mechanical

and hydraulic hand tools.

Inspect defective equipment and diagnose malfunction using motor analyzers, pressure gauges,

chassis, charts and factory manuals

Disassemble and overhaul internal combustion engines, generators, starters, transmissions,

clutches, and rear ends.

Perform both acetylene and electric welding.

Be able to read and interpret diagrams, charts, and factory manuals in diagnosis of trouble,

maintenance and repair of vehicles.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS AND CONDITIONS:

Reports to: Shop Superintendent or another assigned Supervisor

Directs: None

Internal: Actively participates within the Cooperative team environment to develop supportive

relationships essential to the success of the functions of this position, achieving the results

expected and encouraging throughout the organization the concepts of teamwork and

cooperative spirit.

External: Develops and maintains supportive relationships with member/consumers, the

general public, and other external contacts to assure positive results.

This position is medium work; requires visual acuity in machine operation with inspection;

requires ability to hear, talk, and perform repetitive motions; and is subject to both inside and

outside environmental conditions in extreme heat or cold with noise, vibrations, and/or hazards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Performs all work required in connection with minor repairs to include brake systems,

cooling systems, suspension and steering systems for automobiles, trucks, tractors,

trailers, hydraulic line equipment, power tools, and special mechanical equipment.

2. Keeps abreast with the latest techniques in light maintenance and repair of automobiles,

trucks, hydraulic equipment, hydraulic tools, small equipment, power mowers, and power

saws.

3. Performs the required preventive maintenance on all vehicular and mechanical

equipment, owned by the Cooperative.

4. Performs in accordance with the schedule approved by Supervisor the following

maintenance activities:

5. Steam cleaning of vehicles and equipment when required.

6. Complete chassis lubrication on all vehicles.

7. Complete oil change for all vehicles.

8. Oil filter changes in all vehicles.

9. Completion of stickers for attachment to vehicles showing date and record of mileage.

10. Complete paperwork for fleet work orders and enter information into fleet software.

11. Performs required maintenance and repair of hydraulic tools, power saws, excavating

equipment, and other mechanical equipment.

12. Performs minor body and fender repairs on all vehicles when required.

13. Performs emergency repairs on vehicular and mechanical equipment when required or

directed.

14. Becomes familiar with service area in order to perform emergency repairs on vehicular

or mechanical equipment.

15. Makes periodic inspection of all vehicles and special equipment according to prescribed

schedules.

16. Completes and submits job order information, time sheets, and other required data to

Supervisor.

17. Receives communications and directives and orally confirms understanding, keeping

Supervisor informed of important information concerning work performed.

18. Operates automotive equipment when assigned; complies with all traffic law safety rules,

regulations, and safe practices while operating assigned vehicle; at all times looks out

for safety of the vehicle, occupants, and loads.

19. Studies manuals and other guidelines to complete requirements as outlined in the

specifications for this position.

20. Furnishes personal tools to perform duties of this position as required by the

Cooperative.

21. Keeps informed of all Cooperative policies and the procedures and attends and

participates in all safety meetings scheduled by the Cooperative.

22. Is familiar with and follow the best safety practices set forth in the Cooperative's Safety

Manual.

23. Attends and participates in annual meeting as required or directed.

24. Performs such other activities as required or directed.

7. Makes periodic inspection of all vehicles and special equipment according to prescribed

9. Completion of fleet data information sheet on new vehicles and equipment, work order

completion and entry into fleet software.

a team-oriented environment in accordance with the Cooperative's mission, vision, and values.

saws.

3. Perform diagnosis and repair on diesel engines.

4. Perform diagnosis and repair on hydraulic systems and leveling and control systems for

all types of mounted equipment owned and operated by the Cooperative.

5. Stay current on mechanical systems for all types of vehicles owned and operated by the

Cooperative including, but not limited to the following: Altec, Terex, Ditch Witch,

Vermeer, Kubota, Takeuchi etc.

6. Become and stay current on management and operation of fleet software.

7. Completion of fleet data information sheet on new vehicles and equipment, work order

completion and entry into fleet software.

8. Perform emergency repairs on vehicular and mechanical equipment as required or

directed.

9. Become familiar with service area in order to perform emergency repairs on vehicular or

mechanical equipment.

10. Make periodic inspection of all vehicles and special equipment according to prescribed

schedules.

11. Complete and submit job order information, time sheets, and other required data to

supervisor.

12. Operate automotive equipment when assigned; comply with all traffic law safety rules,

regulations, and safe practices while operating assigned vehicle; at all times monitor and

maintain the safety of the vehicle, the occupants, and its loads.
