Automotive Mechanic Supervisor I - EXAM

Under general supervision, is responsible for supervising and working with a small crew of skilled automotive mechanics; performs related duties as required. (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)

  • Supervises a small crew to include evaluating and signing performance appraisals, recommending leave requests, and initiating disciplinary actions;
  • Assigns repair and maintenance jobs to automotive mechanics;
  • Advises and assists subordinates in major repairs and difficult diagnostic work; uses computer equipment to diagnose and correct problems;
  • Makes major and minor repairs to motors, chassis, bodies, and associated components or parts of motorized equipment, repairing or replacing worn or defective parts;
  • Ensures motor vehicles and equipment are in compliance with federal, state, and local vehicle and equipment safety rules and regulations
  • Meets with management to discuss projects, work performance, and goals;
  • Maintains various equipment, stock records, and performance records for the shop and equipment entrusted to it;
  • Determines the necessity for new parts and equipment and makes requisitions for needed supplies and parts from a central storeroom;
  • Inspects repair work of subordinates and conducts performance tests to check successful completion of repairs and overhauling;
  • Operates a computer to initiate and update work orders and complete reports;
  • Operates commercial motor vehicles and equipment, which require a commercial driver's license.
Two (2) years of experience as a fully-skilled automotive mechanic.

Possession of a valid motor vehicles operators license.

Some positions may require possession of a valid Class A commercial motor vehicle operator's license allowing the operation of vehicles with air brakes. For some of these positions, one (1) or more of the following endorsements may also be required: Passenger Transport (P), Hazardous Materials (H), and Tanker (N).

The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create a NEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list for this classification. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. The examination process will consist of a multiple-choice exam weighted 75% covering Reading Comprehension, Problem Sensitivity, Logic and Reasoning, Parts Identification, Safety, and Mechanical Repair & Diagnostics, and a training evaluation weighted 25%.

Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.

All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
